Geometric Ordering of Concepts, Logical Disjunction, and Learning by Induction
In many of the abstract geometric models which have been used to represent concepts and their relationships, regions possessing some cohesive property such as convexity or linearity have played a significant role. When the implication or containment relationship is used as an ordering relationship in such models, this gives rise to logical operators for which the disjunction of two concepts is ...
متن کاملStrong Normalization of Classical Natural Deduction with Disjunction
We introduce λμ→∧∨⊥, an extension of Parigot’s λμ-calculus where disjunction is taken as a primitive. The associated reduction relation, which includes the permutative conversions related to disjunction, is Church-Rosser, strongly normalizing, and such that the normal deductions satisfy the subformula property. From a computer science point of view, λμ→∧∨⊥ may be seen as the core of a typed cbn...
متن کاملNatural Concepts in Macroeconomics
Ragnar Frisch proposed in 1936 a procedure for estimating natural variable values by modifying what are now called structural macroeconometric models. This paper shows that Frisch’s procedure can be used to illuminate natural concepts using today’s models. The procedure also forces one to be precise regarding the assumptions used in moving from a short-run model to a medium-run or long-run model.
متن کاملQuantum Interference and Superposition in Cognition: Development of a Theory for the Disjunction of Concepts
We elaborate a theory for the modeling of concepts using the mathematical structure of quantum mechanics. Items and concepts are represented by vectors in the complex Hilbert space of quantum mechanics and membership weights of items are modeled by quantum weights calculated following the quantum rules. We apply this theory to model the disjunction of concepts and show that the predictions of o...
متن کاملCURRENT CONCEPTS / CONCEPTS COURANT Adult neurogenesis in natural populations
The dogma that the adult brain produces no new neurons has been overturned, but the critics are still asking, so what? Is adult neurogenesis a biologically relevant phenomenon, or is it perhaps harmful because it disrupts the existing neuronal circuitry? Considering that the phenomenon is evolutionarily conserved in all mammalian species examined to date and that its relevance has been well doc...
